Using Nature To Cool Buildings

Botanical Architecture

The 2015 Austrian Pavilion expo showcased a project called “Breathe.Austria” in Milan. It hosted a 560 square meter forest patch in which nature’s processes were enhanced by natural ventilation, automated misting and a new type of photovoltaic panel system.

Without air conditioning a small patch of augmented forest has made a big difference, reducing the ambient temperature by 5-7 °C. Its hourly oxygen output was equal to that of a regular forest 50 times bigger. This is only possible in a hybrid design. Imagine the possibilities if every major city had its own mini forest, cooling the earth and supplying much needed oxygen to the world.
